How to Create Candid Wedding Photography

Let’s unpick how great unposed moments are captured

Candid wedding photography has fast become the most popular way to capture a big day. With modern couples now passionate about presenting their wedding day with authenticity. And while this natural, free-flowing style of photography does look stunning. It can feel like a daunting prospect pre-wedding for the marrying couple. As many are often unsure how everything will be captured, and whether they’ll be able to fight the nerves and look natural themselves.

Capture genuine wedding moments with our candid photography tips.

Trust in Your Wedding Photographer

If you do not trust your photographer, it’s impossible to look natural on camera. You must feel truly comfortable in their presence and confident in their every direction to effectively capture candid wedding photography.

This trust is rarely developed instantly, and typically needs to build up over a series of meetings. The best, of course, being an engagement shoot. Which offers the perfect opportunity for both couple and photographer to get a sense of how best to work with each other.

Practice Being on Camera

Not only do engagement shoots help build trust, they also help the marrying couple practice feeling natural on camera. Getting used to following prompts from the photographer and interacting with each other as genuinely as possible. Trying this out away from the pressures of the big day will really help you feel more confident when the time comes. Plus, you get some beautiful photos to put on your wedding website!

Forget About the Camera

Easier said than done! But when candid wedding photography is being shot, it’s best to forget there’s a camera present at all. We’ll certainly do our best to help you do that by using various perspectives, and taking shots from the shadows, without interacting with you unless truly necessary.

Being photographed will feel odd to begin with, but as with many things, you will get used to it. Just concentrate on enjoying your day, and let the photographer capture it!

The Key to Candid Wedding Photography is Movement

In an attempt to get the perfect shot, couples often stop or even pose for the camera. Which unfortunately makes them look stiff, and impossibly unnatural.

Candid wedding photography is all about capturing movement. Be that a smile, a wink, or a swish of a bridal train. These types of movements need to be spontaneous, and not necessarily performed for the camera. But if doing something intentional with your hands during portraits makes you more relaxed, then feel free to explore each other. Being tactile with a partner can usually help couples feel more present and relieve tension.

Embrace Minimal Editing

Good candid wedding photography shouldn’t require a lot of post-production. Because the aim of shooting in this style is to represent the day as it was. An embrace of natural light, colors and skin tones. There will, of course, be some editing to your photos, but it’ll be carried out with the sole purpose of maintaining the true colors present on the day.
