5 Things That Make a First Look Even More Special

You know that moment when the world goes quiet for just a second?
That’s a first look.
It’s one of my favourite parts of the day to photograph — not because it’s “trendy” or because Pinterest says so, but because it’s real. It’s emotional. It’s yours.
It’s a quiet breath before the whirlwind.
And if you’re thinking of doing one, or you’re already set and just want to make it even better — here are 5 little things that can make your first look wedding photos extra powerful, extra meaningful, and yes… extra beautiful.
1. Choose a quiet, private spot
This is the one time in your wedding day where the two of you can be alone (or as alone as you can get with a ninja photographer in the bushes 👋).
Pick a spot away from guests, away from the chaos. A garden path, a tucked-away corner, a rooftop, a forest trail — whatever suits your vibe.
The more private it feels, the more present you’ll be in the moment.
2. Take your time
Seriously. Don’t rush through it.
Let the moment breathe. Hug. Cry. Talk. Soak it all in. I’ll be there, shooting quietly, giving you space while making sure we get the real, unscripted magic.
This is not a 30-second photo op — it’s a full-on experience. One you’ll remember forever.
3. Exchange a letter or a small gift
Want to add another layer of emotion? Bring a handwritten letter, a small meaningful gift, or even a private vow if that’s your style.
It’s not about the thing — it’s about creating connection.
One of my couples gave each other matching pocket watches engraved with their wedding date. Another couple read notes they’d written years ago, sealed in envelopes “for our wedding day.” I was trying not to cry behind the camera. (Didn’t work.)
4. Walk in slow — like, really slow
This seems so small, but it changes everything.
That slow, deliberate walk-up builds anticipation — for both of you. It lets me capture every tiny reaction. And honestly? It makes it feel more cinematic.
You’ve seen the rom-coms. Let’s make your moment even better.
5. Don’t think about the photos
I know, I know — ironic, coming from a photographer. But the best first look photos? They happen when you stop thinking about the camera.
Focus on each other. Be fully there. Laugh if it’s awkward. Cry if you need to. Just feel the moment.
And trust me — the photos will be even more beautiful because you weren’t trying to pose for them.
First Looks Aren’t for Everyone — But If You Do One, Make It Count
Whether or not you do a first look is totally up to you. But if you’re even considering it? These little moments can turn it from “something sweet” into something unforgettable.
The real win?
It calms the nerves. It sets the tone. It reminds you why you’re doing all this in the first place.
And as your photographer? I’ll make sure the photos reflect every second of it — the joy, the love, the anticipation.
