5 Things to Include in Your Wedding Detail Flat Lay

The dress. The florals. The laughter. The tears.

These are the big moments we all expect to see in wedding photos.

But you know what ends up getting just as many gasps?

The detail shots.

The flat lays. The little things that help tell the full story of your day — through the objects that meant something.

That’s why I always carve out time to photograph your wedding detail flat lay at the start of the day. It’s one of the first ways we get the tone, the vibe, and the memory of it all going.

Here are 5 things you can gather in advance to make sure your flat lay feels as special as the rest of your day.

1. Your invitation suite (yes, bring two copies!)

Your invitation suite is like the visual introduction to your wedding. It sets the tone for the whole day. I love including:

• Full invitation

• RSVP card

• Details card

• Envelope (with stamps!)

• Wax seals, ribbons, or calligraphy touches

If you can, bring two full sets — one for styling and one just in case. Even if you think “but everyone already saw this,” trust me — you’ll want it in your gallery.

2. Rings — all of them

Cute ring box or dish? Extra credit.

Your rings are kind of a big deal — and they look amazing styled with the right backdrop. Whether you’re going classic, modern, or boho-chic, the rings bring it all together.

Bonus tip: If you’re not wearing them in the morning, keep them with the other details so I can photograph them early before things get busy.

3. Accessories + personal items

Think perfume, earrings, cufflinks, watches, vow books, a handwritten note, heirloom jewellery, or anything sentimental you’re including in your day.

Don’t overthink it — if it’s meaningful to you, it’s worth photographing.

One of my grooms included his grandfather’s pocket knife. One bride gave me a pressed flower she’d saved from their first date. Those are the kinds of things that make your flat lay yours.

4. A fabric swatch, scarf, or ribbon

This one’s underrated but so good.

A piece of fabric that ties in your colours (from your bouquet wrap, bridesmaid dress offcut, or even your veil) adds depth, texture, and elegance to your flat lay. And if your florist has extra ribbon or linen — bring it along!

I’ll layer it under details to add softness and cohesion to the final image.

5. A few loose florals or greenery from your florist

If your florist can spare a few extra blooms or sprigs of greenery, DO IT. Seriously.

Even just a few buds can elevate your flat lay to full-on magazine level. We’re talking Pinterest gold here. They add life, movement, and tie everything together visually.

You can ask your florist for a “photography detail bag” — some already offer this!

Best Practice: Pack It All in One Spot the Night Before

Want to make the morning super chill and stress-free?

Throw all your flat lay details in a small box, pouch, or tote bag the night before the wedding. That way, I can start photographing everything right away when I arrive — and you can sip champagne and soak in the morning.

This little prep step = more time for candids, hugs, and hype squad dance parties.

TL;DR: Flat Lay = Tiny Details, Big Impact

Your wedding day is full of big feelings. But the little details? They’re the quiet narrators.

They remind you what you wore, what you held, what you chose to include — and they tell your story without saying a word.

And I’ll be there to photograph it all, beautifully and intentionally.
