The Alternative to Golden Hour You’ve Probably Never Heard of
Bring a unique, romantic vibe to your wedding photography by shooting during Blue Hour
If you’re beginning to research wedding photography, you’ve likely come across the term, ‘golden hour’ once or twice by now. That magical part of the day when your patch of the planet is bathed in a soft, warm glow. Photographers love to shoot at this time, and it does help to create some wonderfully dreamy imagery. But what if we told you there was an alternative to Golden Hour that’s way less talked about, but equally enchanting. Let us introduce you to Blue Hour!
What is Blue Hour?
Going for something blue at your wedding? Go out just before sunrise or after sunset, and you’ll experience Blue Hour. A time of the day when the sky is full of deep blues and purples, which gives wedding photography quite a mystical vibe. It’s the alternative to Golden Hour, not only because it’s less popular, but also because it feels entirely different. More dramatic, more cinematic. With an edgier feel than the super soft backdrop that Golden Hour offers.
Why Consider Blue Hour for Your Wedding Photography?
Not every wedding portrait session can be planned to coincide with Golden Hour. Due to its popularity, couples often feel like it’s a must, and get quite upset if they can’t align their timeline with it. Blue Hour offers an equally spectacular alternative to Golden Hour, one that may well fit better with your schedule.
Beyond the positive practicalities of shooting during Blue Hour, there are also many aesthetic reasons why we love this time of day. Such as the moodiness and cool vibes it brings. But also how flattering the light is during Blue Hour.
Much like Golden Hour, the light from the rising or setting sun during Blue Hour is diffused. Which gently smooths the skin, and minimizes harsh shadows. While the blue and purple tones in the sky contrast theatrically with light tones, especially white. Meaning your dress will really pop in your wedding photos, feeling almost 3D-like.
Blue Hour isn’t for everyone, but if you’re tying the knot later in the day, or you’d like to bring a little more drama to your wedding photography. Twilight could be a great alternative to Golden Hour, and perhaps a better fit for the feel of your big day.
